Live in Cape Cod MA looking for 2 egg laying hens

Yeah, it is. There was a yard sale near my neighborhood in Wellfleet this past weekend. I wanted to go just to see the guy's chicken coop (he sells eggs from a cooler out front sometimes), but hubby wouldn't agree anytime we passed by. Nuts.

HI EVERYONE! NICE TO SEE FELLO CAPE CODDERS! I AM WONDERING HOW YOUR CHICKS DO LIVING HERE, AND HOW ARE THE WINTERS FOR YOU? i AM VERY CURIOUS AND WANT TO GET ALL MY EGGS IN A ROW B4 I GET THEM...i INITIALLY WANT TO START OFF WITH 2 PULLETS,,,DOES THE BARNSTABLE GRAIN STORE JUST HAVE PULLETS OR ARE THEY MIXED WITH ROOS?? THANX FOR ALL THE HELP!

I have 8 chicks right now (4 Buff Orps and 4 RIR's) that are just about 4 weeks. I have insulated my coop and have plans for power out there should the need arise to get some heat in there for the really cold nights during winter but from what I have heard they do pretty well. From everything I have read, it's not the cold that bothers them - it would be any drafts that get in. I am planning on putting the girls out in the coop either this weekend or next, they are just getting way too big for the brooder I am using already!
I bought all of mine at the Farm and Feed store in Barnstable and they were all pullets. They have there chicks ordered for the next couple of months and I believe that if they can be sexed early on, they are getting pullets. If not, perhaps they are getting straight run and then it is hit or miss.
I will be stopping by there tomorrow to pick up some more food for the girls. If you have any specific questions for them, let me know and I will get you some answers.
We should have our own Cape Cod Link! What do you think Nifty???

I wouldn't worry much about the winters at all as long as you pick breeds better suited for colder climates. I would however get more then two birds. I can pretty much guarantee that once you get them you will want more and it's easier to raise them together rather then introduce new birds. Also, chances are you will see more bullying with two birds as one picks on the other constantly.

Yay!!!Another Cape Codder. Welcome!!! I got 2 of my chicks at Waquoit feed and grain and I think he owns the feed and grain store in Hyannis as well. I got my other 2 from Cape feed and supply in West Barnstable. Good Luck
