I have 3 hens going n 5 or 6 years. They sleep and poop in their nesting boxes. Started to slow down in production In late July.

Not sure. Many months. It is same height as their roost area but across from it.

You can go and put them on the roost every night and after a week or so they will naturally start using it by their self

Birds are probably getting ready to molt and why they are not laying.

Sleeping in nests an be changed by making roost a foot higher than nests, as long as they can get up and especially down without crashing into anything.
Covering nests an hour before roost time can force them to start using roost,
then uncover nests after dark when you lock up or very early in morning,
or you can remove them from nests and place them on roosts well after dark for how ever long it takes to change their habit, could take a week or more.
