livestock auction etiquette

I will back off on bidding from a mother that is with her children who think the animal is cute.
Dealer John must pay if he wants to play.

Sometimes people are like that. Good deals are the whole basis for an auction. If the seller wanted John to have them they would have sold them to him before the auction.

That is ridiculous to let one person control an auction. Good for you, even if you didn't know at the time, to stick to your guns and get those chickens. . .what is the purpose of an auction if not to BID????

as far as Im concerned at auctions, the highest bidder gets it. Ive been approached after I purchased something, actually a 'lot' of several things. The gentleman only wanted one particular item and offered me nearly what I paid for the whole lot so I said sure. But it was polite and reasonable. What he offered you was unreasonable. To be told not to outbid John makes him sound like the town bully. What he wants he gets. Thats not right.

Oh I agree Barry! If there are kids involved especially little ones, I will just let it go. I figure I can get chicks any day of the week at our sales, but MOMMY might only have this chance to make a kid happy!

ams3651 I also have been approached after an auction to sell just one and same goes. If it is at least what I paid and I really did not want the whole lot deal away!!!! I have also approached people about one particular bird in a lot of 5 or 6. Sometimes they really wanted the same ones I did and sometimes not. Either is fine. The highest bidder has the upper hand.

Thank you all. At least now I know that there are people like that everywhere, as well as really nice people who let kids get nice little things too.
I thought maybe there was some sort of auction etiquette that I didn't understand. I don't buy a lot of things, just a few cute, ornamental birds or goats. But somehow, I must have taken something that the dealer really wanted. I would have only taken one rooster, but the price was so uneven, I just went ahead and got them all. It upset someone who thinks he's important.

I've never bid in an auction, but totally back you up on this one. This guy had a lot of nerve, and if people are intimidated by him, that's too bad for them. I wouldn't back down from a bully and agree with the other posters who stated that if John wanted the birds so badly, he should raised his bid. My response to all of those nosy people would have been, "If John really wanted those birds, why didn't he raise his bid?" All the best to you, don't be intimidated by bullies.

Makes you wanna go back to the auction and announce the following:

" For all of your information, I am here to bid on animals, if you want the animal, I suggest you bid what you think the animal is worth. If you don't bid and I get the bid, don't come crawling to me to sucker me out of an animal for less than I paid. OR less than I think it is worth. SO, if you want it bid for it!"
