Living off Social Security

am just going to share some of my thoughts, now am not a great gardener am just figuring things out, (where i live in my climate) so am no help.

but aquaponic's to me it seems like the future of gardening indoors. am no expert i want to try it but money is short so am putting this off for a while, but in the long run you can run fish and veggies, and if your allowed tilapia they seem easy to breed. (maybe even sell some babies to cover costs)

now for meat, rabbits seem to me to be an ideal small easy to care for meat source (and there both nutrition and tasty) could even sell extra bunnies as pets or breeding stock. i read you can produce the meat for i want to say $2 a lb with just using bought rations. might even be cheaper with supplementing the extra veggies from your garden (or aquaponic's)

also read a few times you can feed pigs the extra scraps of veggies and the roots from your garden or in this case the aquaponic system. making for a cheaper food source for them bacon's

Great thread @perchie.girl We're not on SS now but hubs will be 60 soon and we have some things to think about and changes I'd like to make.

Thanks for sharing.
I think we can relate climate wise... I suspect you are a bit hotter in the summer time... but same skills apply.

Tilapia may not be a choice for your climate but there are several that handle a colder seasonal climate for Aquaponics. Even here in the desert it gets too cold in winter so I will have to heat the water part of the season... but I cant grow the colder climate fish because we stay too hot for them. Its easier to heat water than chill it....

Check out Aquaponics sites in your area... they may be helpful
