I'm trying to decide between two options for a permanent 25x25 run. Both have their pros and cons from what I can see as a newbie so I was hoping those with more experience would be able to see any major flaws in one area vs the other that I wouldn't know to think of.
Option 1 is directly behind the coop. It is 100% shaded by a variety of mature trees, no grass but plenty of biodegradable material offering lots of incects and stuff to scratch around in. We live in Oklahoma so I thought the shade would be nice during the summer and the trees help keep the snow, when we get it, from piling up too bad. I think the wind would be better here too, we regularly have strong winds and this area has blockage on most sides.. In this location I would make 2 coop doors, one for the big girls and one from the growout area into a small enclosure inside the run.
Option 2 is about 25-30 feet away requiring a tunnel (chunnel lol) and could only have 1 door so the grow outs would be left inside unless I moved them daily. It is in a mostly open pasture with a single tree that would shade about 1/2 the run in the late afternoon. The grass would be gone quickly and under it is mostly sand and clay but with it being in a sunny location I could add planters in the future to grow things for them. I have already bought a mister for this area so they would have that and I would add a tarp or something else for shade opposite the tree.
