Lock Chickens

I had a cross beak. She was such a love until a fox sneaked in while free ranging and took her. It really broke my heart. No more free ranging. This was Gladys.

Hello everyone!
After more than a year of constantly finding myself on this forum, I have decided to join (lol). I find myself here whenever I want to know if my problem is normal/abnormal; what other folks are doing for their chickens. Sometimes just like reading the forums because it makes me feel normal.

I am fairly new to chickens, I've had my flock for two winters. When I was a youngster, I had chickens as a house pet (yes, please don't laugh). But my current flock is strictly outdoors (unless they are unwell).

I started with 9 total in my flock (two were roosters). One of my roosters was culled because he broke his hock and it was just a miserable mess, the other rooster turned into an enormous jerk (nicknamed him rapey roo), and he went to live on a farm with lots of other hens to annoy. That left me with my 4 rhode island reds, 2 easter eggers and 1 sapphire gem. Until the beginning of this year, one of my RIR's (Bossy-Boss) passed away, so now I'm down to 6. I don't have any idea on the age of my RIR's they were picked up from a local farm when I first acquired them and they've been a hot mess since day one; but I enjoy them and their silly personalities and try to do my best to give them a happy life.

I really enjoy it when they are all well and doing what chickens do, just mulling around and chirping their sweet little sounds - I've spent many hours in the run with them, just watching them and contemplating life lol.

I live in a rural area on 25 acres with my husband, cat and dog (and my little flock), but we also have indigenous animals here - bears, fox, feral cats, coyotes, deer, etc. In the spring, we intend on enlarging the chicken run and making our own coop before we get our next shipment of chicks in May. When I'm not outside with the chicks, my occupation(s) include event venue owner, CFO and HR director of an international software company.

Looking forward to posting and talking with you all!

Theresa (LockChicks)
