Why are so many threads being locked?

I log in, some days to have a little fun, some days to ask a question or to see if I can answer someone elses - or to chat with like minded people about nothing in particular. AND BAM out of the blue yonder thread get locked -- at times with no reason other than:
Thanks but this has run its course - or thanks but the question has been answered
etc.....

Isn't the point of a forum like this to have conversations with each other? How can we do that if threads are locked just because one or two people think the subject is over?

Really, lets discuss this lets not LOCK this thread as well, feel free to speak your mind as far as I'm concerned, I'm not easily insulted and my feelings don't get hurt by words on the computer - so HAVE AT IT............

I would have to agree-while I respect the Mods. and all the work they do, a lot of post are getting locked. Hmmm.....

My suspicion is that they don't want us to wander too far off topic.

When politics and religion come up, it's better I think if we remind ourselves of what unites us, not what divides us.

I can understand when people start calling names and being upset, insulting etc.... but a lot of the posts that are being locked are not about religion or politics, and there is no name calling etc.. just friends having fun! its THOSE posts being locked - and I am trying to understand WHY?

Even if it gets off topic, whats the big deal about that? People DO get off topic even in one on one conversations, heck I've been in plenty of business meetings that have done just THAT - they never booted us out of the board room!
In the case of going off topic, why cant the moderator simply add something to the subject line, why lock the entire thread?

If the one or two people happen to be mods, that's what we do, at our discretion. If you want to have private conversations about whatever, there's email. There's only so many pages of nonsensical stuff we need before it gets old.
* Do not post threads questioning moderation

Drake Maiden made a very good point and I'm quite weary of the entire thing tonight so, at the risk of having my name dragged through the mud, I'm locking this one, too.
