Lodging at Niagara Falls

Our family of three adults is planning on spending two nights and three days in the Niagara Falls area of New York in mid-July. I was wondering what suggestions you have on reasonable motels in that area. Can you make any recommendations? Have you had a bad experience someplace that you would recommend we not stay? Thanks for your input.

I don't know the answer to this, but I am interested b/c I've always wanted to go there and maybe someday soon I will.

If no one answers, why don't you call someplace there and ask for a recommendation...like funeral homes, chamber of commerce, catering hall etc. You need to ask someone that would have nothing to gain by recommending a place.

I love expedia.com. They have hotels rated and everything. So far (knock on wood) I have had a good experiance.

DON'T stay at Howard Johnson's on the US side. We stayed there last October on a second honeymoon. The jacuzzi didn't work, the fire alarm went off at 930 PM, and we were advised to exit to our "balcony", which essentially was a concrete pad with a $5 plastic patio chair, and when we tried to open the sliding glass door, the bar stuck, and suddenly snapped off, hitting me in the eye and giving me a black eye. Then, after all that calmed down, we went to sleep and the alarm clock was set to go off for 1 AM. We got up in the morning and tried to make coffee with the coffee pot in the room and it didn't work.

At check out, when I complained, they told me I should have walked around and tried different plugs around the room until I found one that worked.

After I politely told them what a dump it was, they refunded $45.00 of our $165.00 room fee. Never. Again.

Honestly, if you can swing it, I'd go stay on the Canadian side. The US side is terrible run down, we were massively unimpressed by the area around the Falls. The attractions are cool on the US side, but the surrounding area leaves much to be desired.

We stayed on the Canadian side a few years back and were impressed by the cleanliness of the area and the attractions available. You have to have a passport to get on the Canadian side, but you can get a picture taken and get a passport for minimal cost.

Good luck, whatever you decide. I love the Falls.

I recommend the canadian side also! We had gone there a few years back and I can't remember the name of the hotel but it was horrible. They tried to give a room that was not what we had reserved and it was dirty. They did end up giving us a better room but it still wasn't good at all. I did reserve on one of the booking websites like travelocity or expedia and was expecting alot more than what it was.!!! The Hotel was in more of like an alley and kind of scary in my opinion...businesses were boarded up....I was very disappointed!!! My husband forgot his wallet so he did not have ID to go over to the canadian side or we would have done that! It looked so much nicer that is for sure!!!

Yes,Canadian side is much better than the US side.

About 20 min from the falls, on the American side, stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast for our 25th. Not inexpensive, but had a beautiful victorian room in a converted carriage house with in room jacuzzi, and a wonderful, home cooked breakfast. Not everything on the American side is run down! Oh, and walked to dinner for a fabulous meal which included absolutely scrumptious gnocchi !
