My chickens are 3 months old, and have been in their coop for a bit. We had a small tree that was about to die in our woods so we cut it down and made the roost (inside the coop) out of it. My pullets do not want to use it. I keep putting them up there, but they would rather jump down and huddle in a corner together. The temperatures are far from cold lately, and they are feathered so I know it's not that.

How far up is the roost? Do you have ramp up to the roost? Natural tree or branch roost are cool to have but they can also be flimsy with some bouncy movement and eventually rot and break. I use landscape timbers for my roosts. Solid, Pressure treated, and hefty enough to last a long long time. Hope this helps!

The log is about 4 inches around, and I have sat on it myself so I know it's not bouncy. Though we may have to replace it sooner then the manufactured stuff. I did not put a ladder to the roost, figured they would just jump up there. Thank you, I will get my husband to build one asap!

Wow! It sounds pretty solid then.. Ramps and ladders are good to have to limit flying and flapping that stirs up bedding dust. I also add ramps to the bars out in the run and the chickens use it to go up but just jump down. :)
