Hello everyone,
I got my four hens about a week ago and I'm currently experimenting with different roost bar setups. So far, only two of them seem to be using the bar, and they prefer perching in the corner on the 2x2(3feet long) rather than the longer 2x4(6feetlong)

I'm considering removing the longer 2x4 and replacing it with a ladder-style roost (see photo). I'd really appreciate any suggestions or ideas—thanks in advance!

Chickens instinctively want the highest roosts possible. Perhaps they are telling sometihng by going for the 2x2?

Having said that a 2x4 is 1.5x3.5, I used 2x3 rough cut (sanded and corners rounded) and they have no problem. How high is the roost?

I suggest two things:
  • get a stump and place it near they roost so they have an intermediate jump up
  • wait for a couple of weeks and see if they adjust, may save you some work.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Yes my mistake the long board in the photo is a 2x3 not a 2x4. I did indeed router the edges smooth.

The 2x3 is resting on the 2x2 on and they seem to prefer staying on the 2x2 and not on the 2x3..... my thought is they like to be as far away from the door and looking at the entrance for safety.
