Welcome to Backyard Chickens sorry for the losses.. Hardware cloth, more than one latch on the coop or and hot wire
Thanks! We added hot wire to our fencing this week after bringing home 8 new Red Sex Links. We lost our pretty Easter Eggers and Rhode Island Reds and Bantams Monday afternoon. I already had 4 of the Red Sex Links on order for pickup on Tuesday, so when they told me that they had extra ones available to add to the 4 I bought those ones as well. I will admit that my heart is having a difficult time getting into it this go around, as I really loved the girls we had before this flock. They all had such great personalities and had their own unique looks and behaviors. I was very much attached to them. I am anxious to see if the electric fencing helps make the difference in protection. Fingers crossed and prayers said! Once these girls relax and become less skittish, hopefully they will start coming out and enjoying the yard in the afternoon when we open their coop door. Right now I am still keeping them closed in, unless we are home and close by in the yard and they are too skittish still to even want to roam around.

Hello, and welcome to BYC. Hotwire and/or electrified fencing are great at deterring mammalian predators.
Got the fencing hot now! Installed this week! Hopefully this does the trick! Although, we only did the top of the fencing for now. Worry about the lower fence for those that want to dig and weasels that can squeeze through anything it seems. Worry about our goof ball big hound that likes to put his nose up to the fence to watch the chickens. We may find that we have to electrify the lower part as well though and the goof ball will just have to learn to not put his nose to the fence. Although, he is my biggest baby out of all my animals and humans.
