Hello A month ago 2 of my pigeons were sitting on eggs when I decided to let them out the male flew out and never came back. The female then was sitting on eggs when this happened after 2 days she decided to quite and the eggs did not make it. So now she is single when I let the pigeons out they never seem to go far unlike lots of other pigeons in my area who will go to gravel roads or by train tracks. No instead they run around the garden ,sit on the roof or get jumped my cat which always ends with the pigeon flying away or bating at the cats face with its wings. But now I'm wondering will she ever find a mate or will she be a widow. Will feral pigeons start coming to my place. Because I aint letting her get it on like donkey kong with just any pigeon it better be a good looking pigeon ugly pigeons will be shot because there a good chance they are carrying illness by I ugly I mean shaggy appearance . So I my question is will a lonely female pigeon attract boys from all-over?. And how do pigeons pair up in the first place?? Thank you for your help :D

first of all why would you shoot a animal second no they proably wont bring any birds back unless theres loads of them near you and what is an ugly pigeon none of them are how would you like to be shot and if there ill then ye put them out of there missery unless it is treatable

Sounds like your male pigeon had some good homer blood in him. I have homers who would never orientate to your loft.

They would have to be prisoner the rest of their natural lives.

When buying homers it is best to buy young birds (squeakers because of their vocal styling).

If you do buy an adult homer I would have him raise three batches of off spring before trying to release him. Even then your odds are 50/50 if he will stay or not.

There is no chance now your male will orientate to your loft even if you recover him.

There is still an outside chance he may return to your loft. I have seen it even after a month of being missing.

Also you were lucky only one bird was at large or they both might have went back to their home loft.

As far as your female bring home a feral it is a good possibility.

She will only bring home one you will find.

Ok first of all I am not turning this in to an argument . I am simply answering your questions.

1st why would you shoot an animal?
Well for meat, (you might as well go ask a bunch of hunters that question they will come up with more stuff then me

) ,to keep an unhealthy animal away from a stable healthy flock with know problems, SO WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY IS that if it is sickly I'm not taking any risk. And shooting it would be the easiest way. In my area there are no traps and I'm not paying an arm and a leg for one.

How would you like to be shot ?
Well if it was an infectious illness that would kill thousands of children and adults honestly I would be fine especially if it ment like I said saving countless lives.
So many seem to disagree but I believe in breeding for resistance in less its lice, mites, and Coccidiosis. cull out the sick ones breeding future generations of hardier stock.

Thank you Hokum Coco for not questioning me about how I run my loft .

Ok first of all I know about the sport dying out what does a lonely pigeon possibly attracting male pigeons have to do with this? And I know people who race pigeons why would I want something like that to die out that has nothing to with my question . And you asked me how would you like to be shot so I responded . Why are you asking me to mind my own business and what are you talking about me killing a pigeon for know reason I stated if the bird is ugly which I mean shaggy appearance then I cant have it near my other pigeons its to big of a risk only like 2 years ago did I have to put down 29 chickens because of a infectious illness that came from 2 unthrifty chickens I got from a friend of mine. This is beginning to turn into an argument so this is going to stop I'm about to get kicked of this forum over this .

First of all, if you saw a sickly or unhealthy pigeon, chances are it would be dead already. Secondly, if you saw one, by that time your own birds would have contracted the illness. Third, the chances of you shooting and actually hitting the offending pigeon are very slim. You're more likely to injure your own birds if you try to shoot an "ugly" one.

Lastly, have you heard of this new thing called medicine? You can even buy it online and have it shipped directly to your house. I heard it helps sick birds a lot.

In all due honesty? If you saw a scraggly pigeon hanging out with your flock, chances are it's not diseased and it's completely fine. Because if it was diseased, it wouldnt be hanging out with your flock. Diseased birds tend to stay away from other birds and they tend to not fly around. Also you tend to be under the guise that pigeons carry "tons of diseases" well, I'll bet you wont shoot any mourning doves, whitewing doves, ground doves, sparrows, robins, chickens, etc etc etc. Because they have a higher chance of giving your pigeons diseases than other pigeons.

Also, about you losing a bunch of your chickens and having to put them down...
Did you try medicating them first? Did you isolate the ill ones at the first sign of infection?
I had 25 birds get violently ill, started them on three different medications, and all of them but two lived. You cant just cull everything you see. You have to wait and medicate.

Not necessarily there are illness that leave birds in the carrier state like coryza and mycoplasma gallisepticum.

''Secondly, if you saw one, by that time your own birds would have contracted the illness''

Not necessarily there are slow spreading illness out there but if there was a infectious illness I would likely cull the bird or birds that are infected and that would LIKELY stop the spread of the disease in its tracts And after the cull I would check over all of my remaining birds and see if they are any others exhibiting signs of illness and just in case your wondering. I am not the only one out there who breeds for resistance there are others !! http://birdhealth.com.au/show_piegon.html So far it has worked for me I have only had to put down 2 birds but now I'm wondering if my lonely female will be will be attracting males that could be possibly sickly. And how would you know weather or not I have a good shot ? You do not know who I am. If I can shoot chipmunks I shoot chipmunks that get to close to my house because they dig into my basement and I don't need them chewing on electrical wires and starting a fire. I think I can shoot a pigeon .Pigeons are bigger then chipmunks which equals easier shot and its not like I would hit the pigeon any were it would be hit in a instant kill area in the most humane way a head shot .I would not hit a pigeon just anywhere now THAT would be CRUEL. And my pigeons are friendly enough that I could easily dump some grain on the ground and they would come flying were the sickly pigeon would just sit there because it would have likely had no contact with humans and would be to scared to come down and then I would get the job done and even if I did miss then at least it would know that my lonely female is not worth getting shot at.

I'll bet you wont shoot any mourning doves, white wing doves, ground doves, sparrows, robins, chickens, etc. . Because they have a higher chance of giving your pigeons diseases than other pigeons.

No one has chickens in my area and I'm mainly afraid to keeping chickens because I don't want my heart to be broken again you don't know how old I was when this happened or how old I am now. It was very traumatic I was of those kids who herd this type of thing happened to other people but never thought it would happen to me though. I did not know much about quarantine or any of that stuff I didn't even know any chicken forums existed so I let 2 the birds in my flock within 6 days my flock was sneezing ,wheezing very smelly but were still active like any other chicken . I ended up taking 2 to the vet the vet prescribed me tylosin 50 It cost me $60 + 40 for the check up. Which cost a lot when your single mom has to pay it!! . It masked the symptoms for a Little while so I wrote on internet the symptoms and it turns out it was a coryza and it said that the best thing to do is put down the flock. This was only 2 years ago I'm one of the younger people on this forum. Ya I have become honestly a little paranoid about it I had know help putting down all my chickens it was just me and I don't want to go through it ever again. And If I ever see a sick bird like a dove, sparrow ,Robin etc. I would not be very worried only chickens because it has been documented that chickens can infect pigeons, ducks ,peafowl and geese etc. doves and pigeons have FAIRLY different life style the odds of them meeting up are unlikely and like I said my pigeons don't go far from my house they stay close .I'm not going to medicate everything I see that is sick sometimes its best to put animals out of your misery . The way I see it survival of the fittest of course if it was a injured animal that is a different story I would definitely help it for example if a bird survived a hawk attack with some injuries I would want the bird in my flock the way I SEE IT may be able to pass its intelligence to its offspring teaching them how to slip through a hawks talons anything's possible and not only that but it would be rude to just leave a helpless little bird with a broken wing in the woods It would likely have know chance to survive. Being a bird that was injured let just say by being hit by being hit by a car it would not be right to just leave it there either. Birds weren't built to avoid being hit by cars , trucks etc.

Contrary to your belief I do have a heart .
