lonely hen... how to introduce her to a new friend?

I had 4 chickens before a predator took three in a single incident. So now my poor barred rock hen is all alone (well, there are the ducks but they dont like to socialize with her). I do not keep roosters, and i feel like really just 2 hens will be enough eggs for my household.

Any tips for introducing a new friend to my 2-year-old barred rock?
Any tips for the friendliest "pet" breed that is also a good layer, yet not broody?

Generally speaking all non genetically altered hens will go broody. Your hen may embrace a new chicken or hate it, however after a few weeks she will prob be fine with it and even protect it. Another barred rock could work or a crossed breed hen or even a rescued battery one if you don't mind the extra work on the rehabilitation of them. Sussex ( especially the white ones tho they are rare) or a buff rock are good layers

I have the same problem. I had 3 hens and lost 2 several weeks ago. I have Rhode Island Reds.. My chicken is 3 years old and she is so lonely. I am getting 3 new hens tomorrow they are 8 months old. I am planning on keeping them separated for a few days with some chicken wire across the pen and than letting them out together on Saturday in the yard.. but I just read that sometimes it works better to add new chickens at night . I am sticking to my orginal plan and hoping it works out. Hope you get some friends for your chicken soon.

yes it does but if you have them near each other first for a while and then introduce them after a few days to the perch then it also works well

Get one or two the same size, and don't worry about it, there might be a few scuffles, but they will settle down quick generally speaking. Have a few hideouts, a few different levels in the run and they should be fine.
