I've begun researching and designing our coop with the goal of 4-7 birds. I'm doing the design in SketchUp so I can tweak it as I learn more. The basic design is 4 8' 4x4 posts with 4x6 3/4 plywood base 18" off the ground. 18" of the 4x4 will be in the ground, though I contemplating putting it on pylons or skids instead of buried. I'm fairly handy, though this has already forced me to learn more about roofs than I thought I needed to know.

I'll post pics/updates as I go.

These are evolving plans, the latest posted pic is going to be the most recent I have.

After looking at the scale, I decided to move the nesting boxes up to 3' off the ground.

There will also be a run attached in the range of 10-14' long, 8' deep, 6' tall.

I had a hard time with the rafters also i went with a 45 degree cut to make a 12 12 pitch, make your run the biggest you can if you don't you will regret you didn't do it in the building stage.

is this overkill? Should I cover the interior wall or leave it bare studs?

putting this here so i can remember for later

this guy's good, he's gives really good instructions.

don't you just LOVE google sketchup? I used that to draw out my new coop build and it made it so easy to get the lengths and angles to cut.

picking up 22 2x4s tonight to start on walls/trusses

got some work done. I picked up a brad nailer to build the windows. All the wood is glued and nailed, so it really ought to hold together.

Also got the back wall put together last night. Went together faster than I expected.

The wife was making fun of me for missing when hammering nails, so I let her have a crack at it.

Next up will be the front wall, then the nesting boxes and side walls,.
