I was going through my Sand Hill preservation catalog and saw a listing for a Long Crower called Tomaru.

They are listed as an Oriental breed in the catalogue.

How are they temperment wise anyone here raise them?

Would they get along in a mixed flock?

Are they heat hardy?

I had a pair of denizli, not a tomaru, and they were flighty, but very heat tolerant, Their builds are very similar, but I think the Tomarus are prettier. There are some here that raise them, maybe they will come along.

I've alwasy heard that the long crower and long tail breeds do not tolerate cold very well as they are native to hot climates. I've also heard that they need a special diet to do well. Never raised any, though.

Flighty I can deal with.

It gets pretty warm here in the summer.

We do get a little snow about 72 hours of it in the winter. Lots of wind. But I can provide space that is a little more protected kind of a free choice warm spot. Actually I think I am going to do that for all my chicken spaces.

Pretty sure their diets are like any other's needs. Only larger and slow growing breeds need specific diets.

I would guess their temperament to be quite fine in terms of aggression vs friendliness, however I hope you're aware that Sandhill's Tomaru Longcrowers really don't have that long of a crow.

Thanks I am sure you are right. But They probably crow a bit more... I am trying to decide wether or not to add them to my list of wants for a flock.

Toni-Marie Astin's website used to list a specific menu she feeds her birds. Looking through it just now, I found some references, but not specifics, which appear to now be in a book she's written. http://countrywhatnotgardens.com/bantamlongtails/ makes some reference to the diets, and the book preview mentions some on page 23, but it continues onto other pages that are not part of the preview. http://www.countrywhatnotgardens.com/book.html

I've
never had longcrowers or longtail fowl (would love either one, but only if I had staff to take care of them
