Hi BYC community,
I finally joined up after reading and enjoying the forums for a while now! I've had one orphan city hen for about a year, my first chicken in over a decade! She's a little lonely so this spring I've decided to try my hand at incubating some eggs to give her some sisters, maybe a boyfriend (if my neighbors won't kill me!)
I live in Chicago, in the Woodlawn neighborhood. We have a small yard just big enough for a free-range flock of maybe 4. I've got a 3 year old, two cranky cats, a teeny little doggy and a turtle on top of it. I may never be able to travel again...
I haven't kept chickens since I was a teenager, or incubated eggs with a fancy Hova-Bator ever! I'm not expecting great results, but I'm hoping for a learning experience I can share with my children. While I'm a 20 year vegetarian and won't be eating any of my birds, I will however dissect any non-viable eggs for the sake of BIOLOGY!
I'm hoping to learn about bringing up chicks, building a better coop, making feed, what to do when I go away for a week now and then, etc. (Now accepting applications for chicken sitters!)
