Hello BYC!

I've been lurking around this site since we got our first chicks in 2012 and it's been invaluable, with all the information and suggestions on so many aspects of chicken keeping. After some trials and tribulations, my partner and I have decided to renew our flock, now armed with some hard-won experience- and there's still so much to learn!

Two hens from the original set (of five) and, uh... well, we were going to get four chicks but they've somehow turned into six (and a duck). I never meant to have nine birds!

Hi and welcome to BYC - great to have you onboard with us (i think you must hold the "lurking record!"

Obviously by now you are very familiar with the site, but you can now join your state thread if you wish.

Good luck with the new flock additions - strange how chicken maths gets the better of us all!

Best wishes

Welcome to BYC. Are you getting more than you planned because of various breeds you want? I never knew there were so many different breeds and how pretty and unique some of them are until joining this site. DH and I agreed we would limit ourselves to 5 before we ever got any, but sometimes I sure am tempted! So ..... I try to avoid the places that sell chicks in the spring just because I don't trust myself ... lol.

I am sure you will enjoy them, and best of luck.

If you only have the one duck it should have a companion. Ducks and chickens can get along BUT- drakes(male ducks) will try to breed female chickens - if they have no female ducks around them. Because duck anatomy is much different than that of chickens, a chicken hen can be killed .

The folks on the" Duck thread" may be able to sex yours from good photos, and advise you.

Thank you so much.

I like to make sure I've got a clue how things are supposed to go before I stick my nose in- though if I'd had a problem I couldn't find an answer to, I probably would've spoken up sooner! I'll be sure to take a peek over at my state thread and see what's going on there too.

Not that we want, particularly, but we seem to have a talent for having animals land in our laps (like the time we ended up with a dozen gerbils, a neurotic rat, a turtle and a parakeet).

I mean, there are breeds I would love to have, you're right about that! And usually we're good about avoiding the temptation...
