Hello Everyone! I've been raising chickens for about 3 years now, and the advise on BYC has been INDISPENSABLE.

A little about me (and my chickens):

I live in the city limits in Corvallis, OR; where, thankfully, we have very few limitations on having backyard chickens. It's all complaint based, so if you aren't taking care of your chickens, and they are creating a nuisance via smell or noise (roosters), then you could be notified by the city to "clean up your act." [IMG] Our neighbors are very tolerant of our feather family, and some even complained when we got rid of our (accidental) rooster! Said it reminded them of their childhood in the country.

I have a flock of 7 chickens; 2 silver laced wyandottes, 1 red sex link, 1 barred rock, 1 buff Orpington, 1 Easter egger, and 1 sebright bantam. We have 3 chicks in the brooder as well; 1 black jersey giant, 1 Russian orloff, and 1 Delaware. I'm very excited to see the different colors they will add to our diverse flock!

Our chickens are semi-free range; we have fenced off 1/2 of our yard for them so they have access to lots of bugs, grass, and other treats, while being kept safe from neighborhood dogs (and I don't have chicken poop on my porch). We also have our compost pile in the chicken yard, where they keep it nice and stirred for us! We keep their environment as natural as possible for them, which I attribute to our never having any illness or infestations (though it's probably dumb luck.) Also, when I first started my chicken adventure, I never realized how much I'd be investigating poop! [IMG]

Thanks for having me, and I look forward to sharing my chicken adventures, and learning more from the seasoned members of this group! [IMG]

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]

Welcome to the Backyard Chickens flock. I would imagine by now you have seen the "poop charts," that denote good, normal, signs of disease or worms, etc. Not a highlight in my day but, they can be very helpful.

I swear, between kids, cats and chickens I've spent most of my adult life investing poop! [IMG]
