I read some threads on lifespan of laying hens that are several years old. I got my first 5 reds and 5 blacks four years ago, because I wanted pullets only, and thought that was the way to be 100% sure. I got 5 more reds three years ago. Out of those 15, I have only 3 of each left.

They all laid, very consistently, except during molt, right up to the end. Most stopped eating and developed ascites - which I treated, but ultimately, tearfully, put down. I thought chickens only lived for 3 - 5 years.

I am SO GLAD to read that people have chickens into the double digits!!! My new batch of 9 are pullets of specific breeds, but I have a question -- how do I know if they are "hatchery" chicks or "breeder" chicks? I bought them at Farm & Fleet during "Chick Days."
