You can tell by looking at the vent?

On roosters a vent check any age, even babies, if they are up right and you see a little thing hanging down in the middle upper part of the vent, like a baby with an upper lip blister it is a boy. Sometimes when you look the boy tuck it in, but it always pokes back out.

They? I know hatcheries vent sex chicks, but I thought they had to very invasively stick a flashlight in and look much further up. Why do people always say “it’s too early to tell” when we could just look at their vent?

Some people are not good at vent reading. Even in the hatcheries they hire someone special to do it.
Good lighting helps, but you do not have to be invasive.
