So I found this little egg a few days ago and have been wanting to get some pictures. I did find it in a nest with all the other eggs so I know it is not a bird's. Don't you think it is CUTE!!!

I think it is from a d'Anver pullet.

In my hand:

Next to another fairly small egg:

In a carton:

In one of those things that toys come in from the quarter machine things:

Next to a dime:

Next to one of those sample floss from the dentist's office.

In case you are wondering about the odd assortment of small objects, I was rummaging through my purse for tiny things.

Awww! As my first two hens have just started laying, eggs are most precious things to me right now!

How precious! My hens have been laying for less than a week, and I'm scouring the coop and run throughout the day searching for secret eggs. It's such a thrill so spot one! You must have an especially sharp eye.

That's called a "wind" (or sometimes a "fart") egg and it's very cute and fairly common for first time layers. If you leave it out it will dry out completely and you can save it whole, as is. One of the joys of backyard hens is having eggs unique to each chicken. Each of my hens lays a recognizable egg. Recently a hen has been laying two-tone eggs. You can see a photo and explanation of why that happens here:

I've found some eggs like that before, but I just thought the way the sun was hitting them made the color fade. I have one Bantam White Cochin that lays nearly white eggs, they are very long, and I only get them once in a while (every week or so). The interesting thing is they always have a band around them that looks like they are cracking. It's the sign of a good chicken owner when you can tell customers the name of the hen that laid their eggs!

I love the ladybug!

Did Backyard Poultry do an article about you, by any chance?
