I know this is a turken (naked neck), but is it pure or not ?? (note the feathers on the neck)

If he mate with a hen (not NN), what is the expected chick to be ??

I have some turkens that are barred also, they are from hatchery stock anddid not cross with a barred rock or anything else. Just a fluke, whitish ear lobe kinda makes me wonder about the one in the photo though.

Second generations and third will have the naked neck but it will vary one chick may look all NN and another may be half as much. I have 4th generation crosses that still show the NN.

From the size of the neck patch, he is not pure for the naked neck gene. So if bred to not naked neck hens, only half of the chicks will have naked necks, half not.

By the way, it is a myth that only the totally bare neck are the pure ones. Pure ones can either be completely bare necked OR have a very small "bowtie" with only a few feathers on each side of neck.

This is an example of pure with the small bowtie from the page linked earlier:

http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Turkens/TurkenWhF.JPEG

Most pictures on the same page show not pure- huge bowtie with feathers covering much or all of the front neck.

If you keep a daughter with naked neck and breed with the rooster, you will get 75% naked neck chicks plus you will notice a few of them will be born looking more naked than others, with either totally nude necks or two tiny puffs on neck like this:

Example of not pure(left) next to pure:

If that black hen is also yours, she is not pure either(bowtie is very big), but if you want to get pure chicks, definitely breed with that hen and keep the chicks with no or very tiny bowties.

It is not a concern the rooster and hen are not pure because turkens not pure for naked neck are very, very common everywhere. Probably lots more of them than pure ones.
