It looks like a dwarf hamster. Maybe a neighbor's hamster escaped.

I had some of those as a teenager and left them at my bf's house, they went into his walls when they escaped.

The pics I'm seeing of Kangaroo Mice have long tails. Hamsters have teeny tiny stubby tails...that should be a pretty big clue to it's species...

Dwarf hamsters don't look much like the big teddy bear hamsters most people are used to. She posted a pic of his little stubby tail. She looks like a little dwarf hamster to me.

It has to be a pet. I think every russian dwarf hamster I have ever known has been mean! Glad you found a friendly one!! It is so cute when the stuff their face full of food or whatever they can get their little paws on!!!
