Pics
My hubby and I fish a few lakes, and see lots of different shore birds. This was one of my favorites this past summer.

Very cool! Never seen one of those before!

I mean, common names are a mess, and it's entirely possible something in your area is called a green heron that isn't called by that name elsewhere. But if you look up "green heron", it's a bird that looks just like the ones in WV's pics. They're one of the smaller herons. I've never seen one up close enough to be sure, but I think they're somewhere near a bantam chicken in body size.
True Dat!!
Not sure what the smaller heron here actually is, have always called them green herons...can't find it with a quick search now. It's smaller than a great blue, but same silhouette and flies with neck extended rather than curved....and not confused with sandhill crane.
Yes, agrees that what WV snapped googles out as the 'real' green heron.

One of my favorite things about green herons is that they often stand with their neck tucked in. That long neck folds up really nicely and hides under all the feathers, so they just look like a bird head on legs.
Yes, their silhouette reminds me of kingfishers...one of my favs.
Not sure we have green herons here, have never seen one.
