If you'll notice, it's eating cat food and not my chickens.

EggChel...my baby brother and I used to catch opossum, skunk, racoons etc by putting a trash can up against a tree with ground beef or chicken thrown down inside the plastic trash can. The critters would climb up the tree and jump into the trash can and then not be able to climb out because the sides were too slippery. We'd go out in the morning and put the LID on...and then throw the can in the back of the truck and release them about 20 miles away or so.
Never caught a skunk...THANK GOD!
Forget renting or buying those traps...OH and make sure you TIE the can to the tree...racoons can tip them over!

That possum reminded me of the time I was newly married, we moved into an old house, I was doing dishes, and I opened the cabinet under the sink to get a bag and there was 3 of them sitting there! I couldn't stop screaming , standing on a chair thinking we had rats. The landlord trapped them the next day, and realized they were baby possums. OMG, one of the most scary things that ever happened to me!

Glad your's is being relocated, maybe you should give your daughter a no kill trap of her own, maybe for Christmas!

Another day..... another baby possum! After dumping off the last one, I had DD put the can back exactly where it was, complete with the orange construction fencing against it, and sure enough, today there was another little pointy toothed predator taking a nap. I gave the trash can a little tap with my foot and it woke up and posed for this picture. That's a pair of latex gloves that it is sleeping on. It had its head inside one of the gloves while it was sleeping, LOL. Anyway, DD is off in the car to reunite this one with its sibling down by the river.

Cheeptrick, What size trash can did you and your brother use for trapping? This can is just an office size one and Im sure the adults could get back out.

OM Seminolewind..... I'd still be screaming if I went to reach into the cabinet and it was full of "giant horrendously ugly rats with huge pointy teeth and beady eyes" (AKA possums, LOL).

Lurky.... LOL Yup, does look like a splash. Those babies have really long fur but they sure got hit with the ugly stick.... several times.

We used the HUGE outdoor trash cans...bigger than the 30 gallon trash cans. I think it was an old restaurant trash can my dDAD brought home one time.
It was quite exciting when we caught something

My DD doesn't want to keep a possum alive. She has a tender heart for animals but if something is messing with her feathered friends-- all bets are off. My DH has had to go out between 10p and 12A to killl them. The coops are right below our bedroom window so if something is in that coop that is not supposed to be there we hear about it.
We have killed 2 possums, coon, and a snake. We do have a live trap that the neighbors borrow all the time but they are responsible for getting them out of the neighborhood.

Trash can trap is good for raccoons, but use metal. They will chew out of a plastic can if you don't get to them soon enough. Nasty creatures !

Alright... I think they're cute.. in a rat-with-a-bad-hairday kinda way. Of course, that's only with their mouths closed over those trillions of sharp little teeth. I'm with your DD rehoming on this one.

I've heard stories of them killing cats. Any truth to that?
