Look what I just pulled from my nest box!

I had this quite awhile back lurking around my coops.

I think it was there because I had a rat infestation in one of my coops. Stupid me, I put an inner wall up around the bottom of the coop and rats got in-between the inner and outer walls and made nests. I have since cured the problem by taking out the inner wall. Got rid of the rats and haven't seen the snake in a long time.

That's when you gotta be really careful. Most bites happen when people are trying to catch or kill the snake.
If you do decide to kill a venomous snake (please don't kill nonvenomous ones, they can be safely moved, release them elsewhere), use a long-handled implement, not a machete. Hoes are good. Keep in mind that the head does not die immediately. Therefore, don't touch the head, as it can still bite, but DO chop it in half lengthwise or through the braincase to kill it. No need to let it suffer more than is absolutely necessary to keep you and your animals safe. If it's not near where you, your kids, or your animals are, let it alone, don't go killing venomous snakes that you find out in the wild.
