LOOK what roo did, should i CULL him

That looks like the work of more than one bird to me, honestly. If you have 5/7 being roosters, you have too many roos and need to seperate or cull your roosters.

Too many roosters are always bad.

Cull means to "select out". After you select those that you do NOT want, you just get rid of them, whether you eats your culls, rehome as pets, have a cull flock, whatever you do. It just means to "select out" faulty individuals from you're breeding flock. Many people make the mistake and assume cull always means kill and it does not. Many people kill their culls, but it is whatever you choose to do.

Ive heard that if you give the roos an outdoor, stairstepped roost (one above the other like bleachers), that it will mellow them out. I dont know if it works, but I can see some logic in it.

Might help when you want to keep multiple males

thanks Kim for explaining that to me.

I thought this is what it meant.

Just separate the roosters from your hens if you have too many roosters. Make a bachelor pen for them and they will be fine.

I would cull. Of course I am new to this list, but I hear soup calling.
I agree too many roos are trouble!

Maybe you can find someone who needs & wants a roo.

Just my opinion!

I just reread this thread. The standard rule of thumb is ONE cock for 10-12 hens, with large breeds. The poor girl is simply outnumbered and is being slowly worried to death.

The ball is in your court - you really must act to remove the males.

I posted a question about this on another section. I have 8 babies that I thought three were male and 5 female but yesterday world war thrtee broke out (they are almost 8 weeks old) and all four of the males are black and blue and bloody messes. The one I thought a female was actually the most agressive. I thought I'd have more time beofre there was trouble....but this is causing pecking order trouble with them all so they are spearated. One was so bad his eye was sealed shut this am and I had to wash it to let it open. Mom is so sick of them fighting she won't stay close. I guess there's no time like the present

At 8 weeks, it is still anybodys fight to win. They are just coming into their own and will fight alot, made all the worse when they dont have plenty of room. I suspect they are confined?
