I read in Back Yard Poultry that you have to take them a long ways away to release them so they can't find their way back. He was beautiful. Glad your babies were tucked in.

I love them too as long as they stay away from my girls!
My grandmother collected owl related things and I inherited some of her stuff. I just love them and now they remind me of her.

I'm glad that one didn't get your chickens! Close call though. Hope you figure out how it got in and can fix it so it doesn't happen again.

He is an immature Great Horned Owl. We had a pair calling in the woods at the edge of our property last spring... very loud and spooky in the middle of the night. So we are wondering if this one was one of their babies? We've also had a Barred Owl calling around our place some too. They are very neat creatures and beautiful. I just want them to stick to mice. They can have all the mice they want. Really.

A Great Horned Owl baby...
Very pretty...my son's a owl nut too.
I once woke him up at one in the morning so that he could hear the Great Grey Owl that was hooting in the pine tree outside my bedroom window.

An easy tip is to cover their head or just throw a blanket or towel over them. Most birds calm down enough so that you can help them when you do that.

That is one mad looking bird. Poor guy. I think most of the recent hawk and owl problems have been from immature birds that mom and dad recently booted out. They're still learning what they can/cannot hunt, and are looking for easy meals. I used to volunteer at a raptor rehab, and the fall and early winter months were when we got in a lot of young birds that had too much bad luck.
