After two devastating predator losses, I am rethinking everything. I only keep two girls, the loss of one was tough. I replaced each one, so still have two.
I am setting up a new run which will hold the coop. Eventually they are going to have their own little Hobbitown. They will have a round door, a nice, well, true to the movies, a not so perfect, uneven fence. I may even cut some of the smaller trees on the outskirt of my property and make a wooden fence. It will be located between a 6' privacy fence on one side and the solarium side of the house on the other. Dimensions, 16x32, or maybe 40, if I feel like it. I would like to grow something tall on the West side for shade that will still allow some air through. South MS is HOT most of the year. I live on the Gulf Coast.
I am researching ideas for fun things to put into their town. For sure there will be a nice dirt bath, a couple of automatic waterers, and plenty of shade from the trees.
I'm not sure what to do about cover because there are three trees. About half can be covered, what about the rest? Could I string something like barbed wire over the remaining top? It would let the leaves and pine straw through. There will be a natural bed of pine straw.
I digress...I want to start some forage flats for them. There is little grass and it will be gone soon. My thoughts were to start about six good sized, mobile, flats. I would like to fill them with worms, and, chicken forage. By keeping it going and starting one every other week, I can provide them with fresh greens and worms. Has anyone done this? Any ideas?
I am not wealthy; I do not have any bad habits; my girls are my bad habit. I have a couple of acres, I can set up a winter flat and grow in my huge solarium. I just want them to be safe and happy.
