Looking at gettin an Australorp roo. Color question

Quote:
I'm planning on upping my flock numbers to 30 hens and pullets this spring, throwing in 2 roos to make 32 birds total. I'd say 2 or maybe 3 roosters would be enough for that size flock. I feel like any more might just cause dominance issues between the boys.

Most hatcheries are selling chicks right now, if you don't mind raising a roo from a day old. Some do sell mature birds as well though.

The lady just replied back to me after I told her no and this is what she said

"When we bought these chicks from mcmurry hatchery we ordered 25 straight run astralorps. We bought them with the understanding that they were pur breed astralorps, not a cross breed. I have two friends that also ordered the same order that I did and there roosters look the same as ours. Sorry we never researched it and took them for there word that they were pur breed because we didnt know the difference between pur breed and cross breeds. Do you know how to tell the differance between a pur breed & a cross breed? thanks & sorry again !!!!"

I do see black australorp hens in the background of the roo's pic and McMurray doesn't sell crossbreed BAs. Maybe there were a few "packing peanuts" included in their orders and this lady and her friend thought they were black australorps too. The roo's owner may have eaten the plain black roos and kept the "pretty ones

He doesn't look like any of the breed roosters that McM has in their catalog. I would suggest Partridge Rock if it weren't for the slate colored legs. I wonder if they did get a mix going. I would contact them and see if they would reimburse or give you a credit.
