We live in Rockville, Md, we're looking for hatching eggs. We'd be willing to drive up to Frederick or Mt. Airy, Damascus, Poolesville - - are there any breeders or hatcheries in our area? We're eager to get started!

We're looking for advice as to what chickens are good egg layers and because we have five kids, what chicken breeds have good personalities as pets?

There is a poultry swap that's held in Shapsburg but I don't know how often. Orpingtons, Welsummers, Australorps, Light and Buff Brahmas are a few of the calm and friendly breeds. I have at least one of all of them. I really liked the Welsummers as they follow me around like a puppy. Australorps are excellent layers and lay even when cold. At one point I read they held the Guiness book of record for laying 364 out of 365 days. I also think there is a Welsummer breeder up near the Fredrick area.
