I am looking for a person that I spoke with in chat. We were talking about older horses & this person suggested some aspirin and MSM supplements.
I need to know which brands they use, since I have found several, and want to purchase ones that someone has experience with.

My memory is terrible and I haven't been able to remember their screen name.

Course, it wasn't me...but I do have a good suggestion. We had an older Morgan mare who had foundered a LONG time ago and was terribly arthritic in her opposing limbs from compensating. (she was just put down about a year ago when she finally foundered in the good forehoof)

Her last year, BL Solution helped tremendously. It's NSAID free and won't cause gastric upset. And, no LOL they don't pay me for my endorsement (altho they should)!

Be careful with asprin and horses. Remember - old remedies aren't always good ones.

Also...you really DO get what you pay for with MSM and Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements. Don't waste your money on the cheap ones.

Are you talking bute or human aspirin?
I have had many an older horse and can tell you what I do if you would like to e-mail me. Of course they are all different and all react to some things and not others. You do not say what exactly is wrong.

My 22 yr. old QH mare has arthritis in her hip. It causes her to limp severely at times. She & I played very hard for 18 years and it has taken its tole on both of our bodies!

There are aspirin products for horses, like Aspir-Ease which are a powder, a paste, a granule or gel, and there are MSM products in liquid, pellet and powder forms.

I wasn't talking about bute. That is a short term solution. I am looking for something I can give her long term.

I had spoken to this person on chat & they have several old horses that they use all the time. They told me what to use, and how much, but not what brands they use.
Of course I didn't ask, I didn't think there were so many different brands of aspirin & MSM. I found 6 aspirin brands and 7 brands of MSM that the vet supply I use carries.

My mare is not happy being idle. She has been a working horse all her life & is not adjusting well to being "out to pasture" so to speak. I just want to make her more comfortable so she can enjoy a light load of work.
I plan on using her for a lesson horse again. She has done that off & on for the last 2 years for handicapped riders.

If I can ease her pain & the vet OK's it, I may just breed her one last time.

Here she is with my GD riding her. This one was taken 4 years ago.

This one was 3 years ago at a rodeo. She was bred at the time, and DH & I were turning back stock at this rodeo.

Here she is 2 years ago shortly after giving birth to her second foal. A stud colt. That is DH's favorite mare in background.

That is one nice looking stock horse. I do hope you're able to make her more comfortable. Child-friendly , perfect rides like her are priceless! Arthritis of the hip is very tricky, indeed.

I'll probably get some eye rolls here...but look into acupuncture and laser therapy.

She is a wonderful horse. She didn't get that way overnight though. It took her until she 16 before she settled down!! She can buck a hole in the wind!!! She is very fast too, DH rode her to turn back stock at a rodeo once, while I was switching saddles on the other horses for him, he was shocked at how quick she was. She only threw me once, but the other times she bucked, she wasn't trying very hard!

She has always been good with kids, and was never really dangerous to ride. She would always take care of me in a bind and I mean ALWAYS. On trails that drop off a long way, she would really pick her footing carefully, and never act up, even if she wanted to. I remember the first parade I rode her in...she was an angel all the way through it, until we got back on the grass where the trailers were parked, the she started bucking...and she would always get a crow hop or buck in at the start of every drill performance too. Real crowd pleaser!! She never bucked during western pleasure, but she would lay her ears back and I knew she hated it. We did well, but she didn't like it at all.
She loved trail classes, she likes to show out!!


DH and I were talking tonight about her, I have absolutely NO sense of direction...she was my compass. I used to go to a National Grassland to ride, it is very remote, and with thousands of acres to ride on, I got lost easy. She would always bring me back to camp...except she went straight to camp, there was no going around on a trail, just straight through! LOL
We have had a great life together, I got her when she was weaned.

I know she will never be able to be replaced in my life, she has been my buddy through a lot.
She has been used for lessons for handicapped riders, been in several Special Olympic Equestrian shows, drill team, roping, driving, cutting cattle, penning cattle, playdays, western pleasure, trail classes, reining, western riding classes, moving sheep, trail rides (including rough terrain) she has pulled me up many steep hills by her tail, she will pony other horses (I have ponied 3 at a time from her), I have dragged many things with her, really anything I was brave enough to try, she would do it.

I never really had time to breed her, we were on the road every weekend, and went off to the woods for every vacation I took. I did get 2 foals from her, both from the same Paint stallion...a solid mare that went blind at the age of 3 (she is a wonderful broodmare) and the stud colt in the picture. He will be a great horse too, once he gets a little older and realizes the world doesn't revolve around him. LOL Right now, we are planning on him to be our breeding sire.

I am rambling on and on...sorry...I just love my Cody.

Oh Jean she certainly is special. EggCentric has contacted you to help with her aspirin schedule. I hope it helps. It is true that some horses just do not want to retire! They love having a job and where she can carry children and people with disabilities she is priceless. Good Luck.

Jean - that is the most heart warming post I've read in awhile. I've had two horses like that in my lifetime do date...the ones you can't imagine life without. They're both gone now and I miss them dearly (and unfortunately for every other horse in the world - I base all comparisons to them!)

EggCentric - small world. We're near crossroads at 372 & 369...and are on our way out, too, if this stupid house will ever sell! I used to live on Old Canton...but had to get out of the city and away from the "1 mph over speed limit" Ball Ground PD. What a PAIN they are! They'll pull ya over just because they're bored and wanna chit chat.

Hey Jean, I am a owner of sevearl horses one being a solid 31. Sevearl products you can use. I am a bit fond of reg people asprin like 7 or 8 of them per meal/grain. You can get a bottle of 200 at either the dollar store or Walmart. If that does not suit your mare the aspriease or a step up is Butte. I am not a vet just have been working with a ouchie horse with very bad eyes.
