My old guy died at the age of 37. He had been kept on bute for 9 years, and on and off before that. I would always use bute. It lasts alot longer, where as aspirin wears off in 4 hrs.
I feel I had to weigh the pros and cons. They had originally invented bute for arthritis in people. They can't use it because it destroys the liver. But they do use it on really old people, cause they won't live long enough to see liver damage.

I prefer not to use bute unless I have to. I had a 18 year old gelding that had to stay on bute when his coffin bones in both front feet rotated. Bute was hard on his system. I know sometimes it is necessary, but I hope she doesn't get to that point for many more years.

It's been found that bute is INCREDIBLY hard on the equine stomach and it can cause ulcers quite quickly. FWIW I use it sparingly and then feed it with some oil and/or a corner of a flake of alfalfa to buffer.

If I feed too much bute to my one guy he gets grouchy, grumpy, pissy and does NOT like having his belly touched- poor bubba. The other two rarely get bute so I can't really compare..

She is acting like a 10 year old!!! LOL

Since I have been giving riding lessons on her every week, it has really seemed to help. She is only walking, so I'm not putting too much stress on her hips in the round pen.
She is so funny, she acts like she is too tired to move anymore when giving a lesson, but when I take her out of the round pen with my student to ride in a little larger enclosed area, she then perks right up and gets a little zip in her step!!! She hates the round pen and an arena unless there are cows in it!! She always has hated that. She is a working horse and she gets so bored with arena work. She doesn't act up, she just gets really pissy looking, but does it anyway. We have won many western pleasure classes with her ears pinned against her head!!! LOL

I still haven't given her anything yet, I'm waiting to hear from my old farrier to see if he can come & check the angles of her hooves. She isn't due for a trimming for a couple of weeks.

Thats so sweet that she will help to teach someone to ride with a sore hip.
I used to give Jaffa Bute in a small bran mash laced with molassis!!! she loved it. I only gave her bute when she was really sore.
