Hi everyone! We lost two of our girls in the last year, and now have one lady, Ginger, left (see picture). We would like to get a few more ASAP so she isn't lonely. We got our three from Agway as pullets less than two years ago. One appeared to have a clipped beak, but other than that they seemed healthy. Well, less than two years later one died from a large mass growing in her, and the other from a prolapsed vent.
We originally got them for eggs, but grew to love them as pets, entertainment, and backyard companions.
They are Red Sex Links. Our remaining girl, Ginger is pretty large, but I hope if we get three new ones, there will be strength in numbers, and/or Ginger will just be happy enough to have some sisters that they will all get along.
We are looking for a breed that has smaller combs (cold winters) and maybe lays smaller eggs, less frequently. Maybe Easter Eggers?? The Red Sex Links are apparently bred to be egg machines, and from what I've read, that can cause them to have more frequent reproductive issues like ours did.
We cannot get chicks, we need grown girls - 6 months to a year old would be great, somewhere in New Hampshire. I live in Manchester and will drive to get them, and would like to see where they were raised. We are looking for healthy, loved, and cared for girls to live in our backyard paradise built for 4 chickens max!
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated by us, and Ginger!
