Looking for a rooster that will guard the flock but will be friendly towards us. I have narrowed it down to buff Orpington or barred rock. Which would be better? Thanks

I have two buff orpington roos and both are great. Breed does play a role, but a large part of it is also how the bird is raised. I had a buff orpington rooster show up here one day that was obviously raised incorrectly. He was very aggressive towards people, the polar opposite of the two I have, one that I raised and one that is the offspring of the one that I raised and was raised by a hen. Aggression is also heritable, so if possible make sure the father of your rooster is not aggressive.

I have 5 roosters.

A big buff you see in the avatar from breeder
2 sons of his hand raised
A DB Plymouth Rock from bought breeder egg
And an Indian Game (Cornish)

The orpingtons are friendly enough, but dont like being touched or picked up. The dad is super nice to the hens always finding treats and calling them over and dancing for them before he does the deed lol. The sons are just being teenagers right now and are in with the Game Roo. The Plymouth Rock is super friendly and talkative and always runs over to me, aslo in with the game roo. The indian game is very wary of me and just like to eat lol.

Lols, as I'm writing this one of the sons jumped the fence and got on the wrong side of dad lol.. I think he may think twice about coming back
