I'm looking for a breed that makes a decent meat breed but is not a hybrid invented to grow at super duper rates. I don't want cornish crosses. I tried Freedom Rangers last time but I'm looking for something that is more sustainable and frankly grows into a healthier chicken if we chose to keep a few around to reproduuce. What heavy breeds grow fairly quickly and taste good? Bhramma? Deleware? Any suggestions.

If you want a fast growing bird, avoid brahmas. NH reds are good as are wyandottes. I would think a cornish would also be a good choice, but im not sure how fast they grow.

Now I admit... I hate them with a purple passion.....

But our Turkens are pretty fair meat birds.

No standard breed will compete with Cornish cross in growth, but I guess out of the breeds I've raised the Turkens and the rose comb Rhode Islands are the fastest fleshing birds.

Hey mississippifb, where did you purchase your NNs from?
Me? Purchase a NN? Surely you jest!

Seriously, they were sent to me as a prank last year I think it was, can't remember now who all was in on it, but I remember they were from two different BYCers. My son liked them, so we keep a few around now. I still think they are ugly as sin.

I'll see if I can find a link to the prank thread, you can probably figure it out from there.

I have found heritage Delawares and the German New Hampshires to grow very well. Also, a heritage RIR may do well for you. In the Delaware and RIR, if you were to buy from a breeder rather than a hatchery you may do very well.

Somebody on here is using Barred Rocks and German New Hampshires to breed some incredible looking project Delawares: Look for the post by KathyIMO..... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/581950/german-new-hampshire/590
