Looking for a male saint bernard

I got the above mentioned stud dog and things have went well so far we have had him since second week in Feb. The have tied 5 times this week....once a day. I separate them if he won't leave her alone. I figure that and from what I see once a day is enough, since you want to rebuild seaman.

Can any of you tell me if 5 ties is enough?

They seem to be lacking interest more so far today.

Thank you for any help!

I just read they don't have to tie at all to become pregnant but wondering what is standard for breeders. 3 successful ties? I am thinking she has had enough and will separate them if needed for the rest of this cycle.

They DO need to tie, but they really shouldnt have been together all week. You run the risk of having pups at different stages of development being born. A few days makes a big difference in a 63 day pregnancy. Ideally, you should have run progesterone tests to know what the best days were. If they are losing interest, it means she is past her most fertile point anyway.

ok, i don't understand why you would buy a stud dog when you have your choice of any dog on the globe these days, with how they ship semen? How could a dog you buy be the best choice for her each time?

For me, since breeding is about improvement, or should be, each breeding I select a different dog who has different traits that I am looking for. There is no way I would waste my ***** by breeding her over and over to the same dog just because he was standing in my yard.

JMO as always....

WELL SAID REDYRE ROTTIES !!!!!! In my opinion..... Breed the best you have to the best you can and hope and pray for the best!!! I allways have a reserve of at least 8 pups before I will breed a litter. Yes, someone is always disappointed. But the quality is worth the wait. I have been told by many of my puppy owners.

What do you mean you reserve 8 pups?

Edited: Oh you mean 8 are already spoken for?

I can see that it is a fast term for them.....I really hope not :( I did not know I could do any tests. I just kept hearing that days 11-15 were usually the best days and that he would know and he did. I have him separated and he will stay that way for a while now. It is hard to get him away from her geesh!

How long before he can be back with her again? To play and hang out....they are friends :)

I read alot about letting them together like every 20-24 hours but not how many days in a row. I wish I would of known that....and I still don't actually know how many days to do that. Like 3 days?

really, without even the basic knowledge of breeding, it was a bad idea to go ahead with this plan.

All of this information is (the progesterine testing for example) would be recommended by any decent vet for a female that was going to be bred.
Did you test the stud for transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) or brucellosis? Both of them are highly contagious and can cause her to abort the litter. She can also be left sterile. Did you have your female tested for them? Most breeders recommend having both dogs tested within a few weeks of breeding. If not, I would get both of them tested ASAP, that way you will know to discuss your options with the vet. Brucellosis is also transmitted to humans, so I would be sure you get her tested. If she is positive, the pups, placentas and all "waste" needs to be handled with rubber gloves for your safety.

Do you have a mentor in Saints? If not, I would try to find an online group (be prepared for them to be pretty rough on you for not doing your homework!) and ask for advice. They can tell you all the particulars of nutrition for her and the developing pups. Be sure that you have a plan in place to keep them completely separated when she gets closer to whelping.

Now would be the time to start interviewing potential owners. If you dont want to take cash deposits, then line up at least twice as many buyers as you expect pups. Start saving in your emergency fund in case of a c-section. Write up your contract for your buyers.
You've got a while to get all your ducks in a row.
Good luck!:D

Yes I am already lining up potential buyers. I have been doing that.

I am also planning on having funds set aside for a csection too, in case needed.

I was wondering about nutrition too for my girl. I hear to put her on puppy food but not sure when too do that or if I should?

No testing for disease has been done yet. This sire has had 3 litters already though with no problems known.

I have a spot to keep them separate and they are separated now and will be at whelping time too. Can they be back together during pregnancy? When should they be separated before birthing? A couple weeks before due date?

Thank you for any help....like I am always getting new info everytime I read or talk to people about this.
