This Spring I will be getting chickens for the first time. I am VERY excited and I think I have figured out what kind I want and how many. My only problem is roosters. I have heard it's reccomended to get one even if you aren't hatching chicks and I do want a rooster. I wanted a domonique because I raised one this past Summer and he was very sweet and laid back. But towards the end he went through a phase where he attacked us repeatedly and things like that. We ended up getting rid of him. Our neighbors who we got him from also had another Domonique who did the same at a certain point and they got rid of him too.
I am looking for a kind of rooster who stays sweet and laid back all his life, and takes good care of his hens (they dont end up bald)
What kind of rooster do you have? Is he nice?

I have what I think is a New Hampshire Red. He is not at all aggressive. He keeps track of the hens and is very nice. But he seems to have a hard time standing on the hen's back. He may be too big.. like riding a small surf board vs a nice large one. He really has to hold onto their neck feathers. One of my hens is not too happy with this! In the past I had a small roo and it seemed much easier to surf.

A friend of mine as hands down THE sweetest rooster I have ever met! He is a Blue Cochin (sp) I think man is he a doll!! Sweet to ppl and the hens!!

My best Rooster was a Blue Cochin,he ended up too big to stand on my girls but he never pestered them so it was not an issue,in fact I never got a fertile egg during his reign...but he was great to his hens, never bothered adults, kids, other critters..he also never bothered my bantam Silkie Roos...he did however take threats to the girls seriously and would defend them.

I have a big variety of really nice roosters. I rarely have had an agressive one, maybe 3 of all of them throughout the last 6 years. I think one of the keys is to see how he is at 18 months or older. I have a large amount of males to choose from if you are interested I can email you pictures.

I have a sweet barred cochin roo cockeral who hatched 3/20 if you were close to me in CA you could come meet him, hes going to be looking for a new home soon (that isn't soup pot or freezer hopefully)
