Ask at the feed store, ask at a poultry club, or county extension office for people that have chickens, if this is your first rooster, what you want is a rooster that is nearly a year old, and who is so nice, he never quite got culled. A rooster that is raised in a muli-generational flock is best too.
No guarantees, roosters are a crap shoot, but you have a better chance with an older rooster.
Welcome! I personally like to raise straight run chicks and grow my own, but there are always extra roosters and cockerels available out there. Do be careful about introducing any nasty diseases, though.
