I am sure I am not the first one to ask most of what I have seen seems to be myth

There is no way. Believe me I have tried all the old wives tales. They either go broody or they don't.

I have never tried to get a hen to go broody mine always seem to especially if they find a nest full of eggs from the day. You could try leaving fake eggs in a nest for awhile and I am sure one is bound to get the broody itch

I really wish one of my girls would go broody. They are both bantam Cochins - a breed known for being broody. I've only had one success. That was three years ago when my current birds hatched out. I decided that if they were anything like their mom then they would wait until there were 8+ eggs in the nest. Well, there's eight now and two hens have yet to go. We'll see. I'm just going to let them keep all their eggs until at least one of them decides to be a mom.

I have broody breeds of bantams, but this is what got them going: I stopped collecting eggs. As soon as each one had a clutch of around 8 or 9 eggs (the size of the clutch will differ depending on the breed of chicken), each one settled in to brood.
