Looking for black chickens

Run some light string or fishing line across your yard (criss cross). The birds don't like to hit their wings on the line. We had owls, falcons and hawks until I ran some line across the yard.

I have found a couple of black hens for sale in my neighborhood, so hope to add them to my other girls tomorrow. I also found a chicken far about 30 miles from home that sells about 50 breeds of chicks and pullets! Someone sent me a link from Craigslist, but I had gone there first and couldn't find ANY animal sales of any kind.

Doug in Colorado -- that sounds somewhat doable for our yard. I'm trying to picture tall structures or trees where I could attach the line. This may take some time to think out.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. I would like to add that " Poultry wire" only keeps chicken IN, it does nothing to keep predators OUT. I don't think hawks would bypass black chickens thinking they are crows. Crow often MOB hawks and harass them in trees until they move away. Crows would not run from the sight of hawks like chickens do.

That guy had something else happen, or he's lying about his results. Hawks aren't fooled by fake model owls, they're definitely not stupid enough to think a black chicken is a crow. Otherwise everyone would just have black chickens and never lose any to hawks. I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of "hawk got my chicken, what do I do" threads where the injured chicken is black, too.

Diva is quite correct there but adding to the flock for any reason is great
Welcome to Backyard Chickens lights or lines are great way to block hawks this is one of the better options cost wise
