Hello, I am writing an article about backyard chickens. I recently got two (a Buff Orpington and a Brown Leghorn, both adorable), and am enjoying taking care of them and learning about them. They should lay in a few months!

For my article, I am looking for information about:

1. how may eggs the average backyard chicken will lay in her lifetime
2. how many years a backyard chicken will lay for
3. how much chicken food they eat (either cost-wise or pound wise). By this, I mean the actual chicken feed and scratch -- not the special treats we get them from our own kitchens : )

I'd also love any other information you'd like to provide.

Thanks so much for your help!

There are a number of great articles and stickies in each of the forums. Many have links to University Ag sites who have done all this research already

You can also use the search feature to get you 90% of the way there.

I just read that they lay for 3- 5 years. And an averge of 900 eggs. but it varies by breed.
