Wondering if any Mainers know any good feed stores to run to and order chicks - or if anyone else wants to go in on an "order" of chicks - reduce shipping $$ and all that stuff. Or if there are any hatcheries in the area? I am new to Maine and my partner (a native!) has no clue where to start. Looking for chicks, not eggs for hatching, heritage breeds.

Hi!
As a native ;) I can tell you there are no local hatcheries, not that I have found anyway. All the feed stores that I have asked order their chicks from the same big out of state hatcheries, but I bought some chickens from some people in Dover-Foxcroft who said sell their chicks to the local Agway. In my experience that is not where you will find heritage breeds though. I would check the Uncle Henry's, that is where I sell my chicks.I just saw someone on there selling Buckeyes. Have you checked with the other Mainers on the Maine thread in the Where am I? where are you? section. There will be chicken swaps right off too. Good Luck!

We are in NH, have Heritage breeds (Dominiques, Speckled Sussex, Nankins, and Dorkings (Fall 2012 availability)), and we ship. Although we won't ship less than 25 birds, but you can also pickup if you wanted to go on a road trip.. ;) . Our web site is
