looking for coops and backyard chickens

Welcome to BYC. You can check Craigslist for chicken coops. I recommend that you purchase chicks or point of lay pullets from a reputable hatchery and not from Craigslist, nor swap meets, nor farmer down the road etc...

and good luck on getting your own flock.

I would suggest you explore the learning center articles and the coop forums to decide what you want and to better plan for housing. Many of the prefab or for sale coops don't offer the best solution.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. My personal recommendation is to avoid buying pre-fab coops which are typically cheaply made, and too small for the advertised number of birds. If you do buy a pre-fab coop, I would go with the biggest one you can buy as over-crowding can quickly lead to aggression, fighting, biting and feather plucking, and even cannibalism. You need a minimum of 4 sq. ft. of coop floor area per bird (not counting the area taken up by the nesting boxes) and 10 sq. ft. of ground area in the run (more is better). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop.
