Looking for Duck House ideas

Love these threads! We are currently renovating our duck run to accommodate the new babies I got this year. This is all so helpful!

Blooie, great report on the indoor ducks! Impressed with the hand-clapping. Nice!

Here is a photo of the outdoor duck house that turned out to be not warm enough for some of my runners. But it's really sturdy and water-tight. Only thing I would change is I would have the roofing extend farther out on the downslope side.

This photo does not show that this is a double-walled house insulated with perlite and vermiculite, because they do not mold. Also not visible is the three-panel plexiglass drop ceiling to improve the ability to manage air flow. There is a sliding door from the house to the veranda - the veranda is covered top bottom and sides with half inch metal hardware cloth. The space between the house and roof is also covered in half inch h.w.c. Doors and gates have keyed locks. You can see the fence charger on the left side of the house - when the ducks were in here at night we had two equine tape ribbons around the house and veranda.

That means electric fence, right? How does that work? I'd be afraid I'd zap me with it, or a duck would somehow contact it. But yes, I have toyed with the idea.

This was my first electric fence. It is easier than I expected. It is outside the house the ducks cannot zap themselves.

You need a fence charger, source of electricity (battery or house current), wire or tape, fence posts and specially made doodads that hold the wire without passing the electricity to the fenceposts.

You also need a ground rod. It is a metal rod that is pounded into the ground. Here in New England with such stony soil I got three short rods. In a perfect world you have at least six feet of rod pushed into the ground, attached to a terminal on the charger. I have three two-foot rods attached to each other with a thick wire, and then one rod is attached to the terminal.

I did it myself. Did not seem that difficult.

There's a couple threads on here if you search "duck house" that have lots of pics!

Electric fence is pretty easy. For something this size you can get plastic fence posts that are easy step-in installation with slots to accept the wire or tape. That way you can do away with the doodads (aka insulators) all together. Alternately, on a structure like yours, you should be able to attach the insulators directly to the coop/run. You can get ones that nail on with a several inch stand-off. I have 3 8' ground rods spaced 10' apart but my fence also encloses 4 acres of horse pasture. You can buy a fence tester or if you are the brave and sturdy type just hand test it - or trick someone else into testing it for you. I usually have someone accidently checking mine for me once every few months. I had a teenage grandson cleaning out a water trough for me that bumped it with his head 3 times before he figured out what was going on. His depraved father and grandparents were about rolling on the ground. The horses, dogs, & goats are all quicker than that.
