We've had chickens about a year now. We got this rooster because we thought he was pretty, but he has turned out to be better than his looks. He's gentle but protective of his hens. Any ideas what breed he might be?

I am going to guess Barred Rock crossed with RIR or Orpington?

Sorry I don't know and this is just a guess.

Agree, a mixed breed rooster, with some barred ancestry. He's beautiful!

Thanks for the replies. That's more or less what I was thinking. Our hens are a barred rock, 2 australorps, and 3 Rhode Island Reds. We just put some eggs in the incubator and can't wait to see how the chicks end up looking with this pretty boy as daddy!

The barred rock hen's chicks should all be barred, and pretty much black with some red leakage.
The Aussie hen's chicks should be half barred half solid, again pretty much black with red leakage.
The Red hen's chicks should be half barred, looking like dad, and half solid mostly red birds.

Cutie pies! They look so "grown up" sitting on their roost! Even giving the camera that "grown up" look LOL.
