When I did try raising meal worms I did use a bedding of oatmeal. Fed them carrots and potatoes so that was easy. Never liked the part of picking out the "ripe" ones. I'm sticking with buying dried.

Yea they love tater skins but they sure get ripe! Oatmeal is really all u need. Get some hardware cloth or mesh netting and separate the container. Top and bottom. The larva will fall through into the lower level. Once you start seeing black beetles u know you its working. The cycle starts all over again. Room temp in a closet or somewhere is fine.

Maybe I will buy 50 beetles for $10 from my local Craigslist.

Check amazon also. Start with worms. Feed them and they will turn into the beetles. Then the beetles breed.. lay larva they fall into the bottom and become worms again. You can discard the beetle carcass or feed to the birds like i do.

Duck Mealworms are so high priced at TSC! Anyone know where I can get them cheaper?

Buy one pack then grow your own mealworms are the easiest treat to breed at home I started with 500 I now have thousands started in a 20gallon tank now I'm in a 40gallon tank

Not a problem. Once you start you won't regret it. Not to mention food for the chickens and Craigslist will allow you to sell your own beetles for 10.00

How long does it take to get from mealworms to more mealworms? A few days? Weeks? Months?

Also what do you use to give the mealworms and beetles water?

Weeks and put in carrots baby ones or potatoes cut in 1/4's change them out every 3-4days
