Thank you so much for the wonderful responses. I live in Maine, so we really won't be ready to attempt hatching until late March. I know I need to wait until after February, we have a trip for medical apts the week of Feb break and no one would be here to watch over the eggs. Thankfully my school is amazing about our access to the building so I can get in on weekends, I only live 7 miles from school so going in on Sat/Sun for a few minutes isn't a huge deal at all.
Thankfully Science in this state hasn't been hit (yet) with a strong push towards testing, right now my place in the curriculum is kind of a form of break from math/ELA -- so I get to set my own curriculum entirely. Honestly though hatching chicks fits right in with what we are doing and I plan to do it at the end of our study of mitosis and meiosis so it will be our learning in action.
I actually have a connection in the Extension office I never thought to ask her, I'll e-mail her now and see if she knows of any programs to help me get an incubator.
