Hey Joan, I'm new too to not only this site but chicken raising. A friend of the family has a farm and I basically grew up there during middle school. Right now I live in Tempe, Arizona. It's more city than anything. Lots of apartments. I can't wait for the day when I get my own land and I can have some chickens of my own.

You mentioned Guinea hens. I heard that guineas are like the angry guard dogs of the chicken world. If you've never had chickens before, I know that you'd be interested in reducing the grasshopper population, but definitely consider their temperament before you grab them. :) I'm originally from Michigan, (Harrietta) so I understand your grasshopper situation. Those little angry birds chased my mom's Dodge Durango down a dirt road before we noticed what was happening, and then then the owner, a shorter older woman full of smiles, apologized and told us that they would chase anything. They seemed to like her just fine though.

If you want some smaller chickens, why not think about bantams? Guineas definitely fall into that category! But there are others too. There are Easter Eggers for example. They look cool and lay blue and green eggs. <3 I wonder what other kinds of chickens go crazy for grasshoppers. That would be a great forum topic!

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. There are quite a few hatcheries that sell guineas, too. Or you can check out your local craigslist or post what you're looking for on your state's thread in the Where am I? Where are you! section on here. We love ours and they've been great at reducing ticks and snakes, too. Good luck

I have a neighbor that has guineas. you are right they are good watchdogs. But we have lots of coyotes out here and the guineas get into trees at nite as the chickens have to be put in a pen or they are a snack . I am gonna get both. The local farm store Atwoods, is out of the guineas, and only has chickens.thanks for the advice and and all is welcome to me
