Hello everybody!

I am a prospective chicken-raiser in the Pittsburgh area. I am in the process of trying to obtain a coop. I would like to start a small flock of four or five chickens. I grew up on a farm and miss the experience of gathering eggs. I want my three little boys to have this experience as well, even though we live in an urban area. I would appreciate any advice you have on how to build or obtain a coop, as well as any advice you have on raising chickens in a small space. Thanks a lot. I look forward to speaking with all of you!

Thanks,
Jennifer

Welcome to you Jennifer. A small flock is the best way to start, IMO...you really get to know their personalities that way

There's a coop link along the top - take a look through the small coop section to get some ideas. If you have a fenced yard where the chickens can free range for a few hours each day, you can get by with a smaller run. But if they'll be contained most of the time within the coop/run, then build it as large as possible...that's my suggestion. And in Pittsburgh, if possible cover your run, since you guys probably get decent snows... But most importantly, just ENJOY them - they're wonderful animals!

We used free pallets from a local shop... see link below "Hinkel Haus" is our coop! Cheap and easy!! We also converted a dog house that will hold about 4/5... sometimes people just want them off the property and you can find them on craigslist! Goodluck!!

Welcome from California!!

As already suggested, definitely check out the coop design section. They have a ton of stuff in there to check out. And when you start building, you should post pictures!! :D We have quite a few city chicken owners, so I'm sure you'll be able to find someone with information on chickens in small spaces.
